About
April 1st, 2009Welcome to Eyecandygeckos.com! Welcome to EyeCandyGeckos.com! We are a small keeper/breeder of New Caledonian Giant Geckos (Rhacodactylus Leachianus) and Leaf-tailed geckos (the genus Uroplatus). We are based right out of the heart of Troy, New York. We diligently endeavor to provide the highest quality captive bred specimens to collectors, breeders, and pet owners alike; and to encourage the spread of the most successful husbandry information available. All of our animals are given the utmost love and care and we aim to create the best possible homes for them.
While we had previously kept a corn snake, and wild caught house geckos, our herpetology really experience began with a small collection of leopard geckos. That collection didn’t remain small very long! In our two years of dealing with Eublepharis Macularis we learned a great deal about the basic husbandry techniques involed with caring for large numbers of herps. While we are currently dealing with much more challenging species, it was our originas with the leos that prepared us to care for our current collection.
We acquired our first pair of U. Sikorae from a wild importer in late 2007. Since that time, we have owned several captive bred and wild caught specimens. Our experience with these animals has given us the confidence to take on the challenge of keeping U. Phantasticus and as of early 2009, we keep both U. Sikorae and U. Phantasticus. We have also found that this experience has adequately prepared us for the challenges of dealing with species of the Rhacodactylus genus. Our rhacs of choice are the Leachianus species.
These species share the fact that they come from densely forested areas of high humidity and moderate temperature. As a result, their natural habitat is somewhat difficult to synthesize. In addition to difficulties with captivity, these species are facing rampant deforestation of their natural locales as well as excessive wild capture and importation. As a result, we feel it is very important that we do our best to encourage the captive propagation of these incredible creatures.
Our herpetology goals are simple: We constantly strive to learn as much as possible about the care of our animals and pass that information on to the public. When it comes to such fragile species, there is no room for “trade secrets.” Therefore, we want everyone to learn from both our mistakes and successes. Similarly, we have simple business goals in mind. We strive to provide the customer with quality service, affordable geckos, and a great product.
